Indian Railways form one of the largest rail networks in the world covering a total of more than 68,100 km and hence, you have almost all the major cities and towns connecting each other via rail routes. Whether you are in the hills of Shimla or the plains of Agra or the beachside settlement of Pondhicherry, you have trains to reach places. In the era of the internet, you can book your train tickets with the help of travel apps like Goibibo, IRCTC Rail Connect, etc. It is just a matter of a few minutes before you have a confirm ticket with you.

But there are times when we have to cancel the ticket and pay a certain amount as the cancellation charge. However, the cancellation charge entirely depends upon travel class, cancellation time, and reservation status. Here, we are going to understand in detail how much amount gets deducted on train ticket cancellations for different classes.

Second Seating (2S) Cancellation Charges 

The second seating, also called 2S, is the lowest travel class in a train where you would find seat layouts in the form of benches. As per the Indian Railways:

  • If you cancel your ticket at least 48 hours before the train departure, the deduction will be 60 INR per passenger.
  • If you cancel your ticket before 12 hours from train departure, the deduction will be 25% of the base fare
  • If the ticket is cancelled before the departure of the train before the chart is prepared, the deduction will be 50% of the base fare
  • There will be no refund in case the ticket is cancelled after the chart is prepared or after the departure of the train 

Sleeper Class Cancellation Charges 

On a confirmed sleeper class train ticket: 

  • The deduction will be 120 INR if the ticket is cancelled 48 hours before the departure of the train
  • You will have to pay 25% of the base fare of the ticket price if you cancel the ticket 12 hours prior to train departure
  • The deduction will be 50% of the base ticket fare if you cancel your ticket 4 hours prior to train departure only when the chart is not prepared
  • If the chart is prepared and the train departs, there will be no refund for such cancellations 

3rd AC or Chair Car (CC) AC Cancellation Charges 

  • The deduction for a confirmed ticket if you cancel the ticket before 48 hours from train departure is 180 INR
  • You need to pay 25% and 50% of the base fare as cancellation charges if you cancel your tickets 12 hours and 4 hours respectively prior to train departure
  • In case the seating chart is prepared and the train departs, there will be no refund and 100% will be charged as the cancellation fee 

2nd AC Cancellation Charges 

  • The deduction will be 200 INR if you cancel your train ticket 48 hours before the departure of the train
  • For cancellations before 12 hours and 4 hours from train departure, you need a charge of 25% and 50% respectively on the base fare
  • There will be no refund if the train chart is already prepared or if the train has already departed 

1st AC or Executive Class (EC) Cancellation Charges 

  • The deduction will be 240 INR per passenger if you cancel your ticket before 48 hours from departure time
  • You need to pay 25% and 50% of the base fare if you cancel your ticket before 12 hours and 4 hours respectively
  • The cancellation charge will be 100% for all the tickets cancelled after the train chart is prepared or the train departs
